GUIDE TO ROLEPLAY

These are instructions on how to create a well written RP. RPing stands for Role Playing. RPing is where you create a character and then Role Play, having your character interacting with others.

1. Create your character. For different sites, the requirements will vary. However, there are some basic information on character creation:

  • Make your character's bio detailed! If there is anything that can be elaborated on, do it!
  • Make your character believable. Nobody likes a perfect character or a Mary Sue or Gary Stu. Make your character human, and you will have so much more fun, however, give them unique quirks so that they are interesting.
  • Most Character Sheets require a history. Here, you need to explain, explain, explain. Include everything you can think of, don't skip things to save time. Include descriptions of parents, places where character grew up etc.

Start RPing. If you are on a good RP site, there should be absolutely no text talking! Use full sentences and good punctuation and grammar. Use quotation marks when your character is talking. Otherwise many people get annoyed and you are made to look silly.

  • Never post one-liners! This is usually just one sentence of what your character is doing. Posting dialogue is not an excuse for a one-liner. The people who you roleplay with may not like it at all. The occasional one-liner is fine (barely) but do not make it a habit to where everyone else has the brunt of the roleplay. You are there too, so make the attempt to write longer posts.
  • Use description! Don't just say "Jane walked into the room and sat down on a chair" Where is Jane? What does the room look like? How did she walk in? How did she sit down? How was she feeling? What was she thinking as she walked in? Where had she just been? You need to think of all these questions whenever you RP. Instead, you could say…

Roleplaying Language

Basic roleplaying keywords are:

  • RP: Roleplay
  • OOC: Out of Character (You may also use parenthesis to show that it is you who are speaking, not your character.)
  • IC: In Character
  • bic: Back in Character
  • Powerplaying: Which refers to trying to control other people's characters.
  • Godmodding: Changing in game rules or controlling other charters actions or reactions.
  • MarySue or GaryStu: Creating a "Perfect character" with little or no weakness, overly dramatic or perfect past, and excellent at everything.
  • Literate: A very good roleplayer who shows that they are able to properly use grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and so forth. A literate roleplayer knows when long introductions are appropriate, understands the place for short one or two sentence posts and keeps in character emotions separate from their own.
  • Semi-Lit: A decent roleplayer who has an "OK" grasp of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and so forth. A Semi-Lit roleplayer typically writes (sometimes excessively) long introductions several paragraphs in length and posts of up to a paragraph and longer.
  • Illiterate: A terrible roleplayer who disregards all grammar, punctuation, capitalization, etc. Their spelling is usually equal to chatspeak. An illiterate roleplayer typically writes one paragraph for their intro, and around one or two sentences per post.
